About four hours after having his right hip replaced, Bruce Axten took a short walk — a nurse by his side — up and down the hallway outside his recovery room early Monday afternoon.

“I’m way amazed at how I feel right now,” the 51-year-old Bend resident remarked to a reporter about 15 minutes later.

Eugene’s Register Guard covers McKenzie Surgery Center’s Free Day of Giving

Twenty patients who can’t afford surgeries they need to correct hernias, bent toes and other health problems will receive the procedures for free on April 30 at McKenzie Surgery Center in Eugene.

This will be the fifth year in a row that the independent day surgery center on Country Club Road has offered this service to eligible community members, administrator Karen Hudspeth said.

Patient Chooses Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center for Three Joint Replacements

The Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center (OOSC) in Tigard is fast becoming a favorite among patients who require multiple joint replacements. Clayton Martin, a 55-year old firefighter and part-time contractor who became OOSC’s first total hip replacement patient in May, 2014 is a prime example.

He had excruciating pain in both hips for six months, had the surgery on the first hip and went home after just eight hours. Martin was so pleased with the experience and results that he returned six weeks later for total joint replacement of the other hip.

OASCA Welcomes New Board Members

The Oregon Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (OASCA) recently announced the election of two new board members, Kelli Coelho and Margaret (Peggy) Dibblee. Coelho is the executive director at Riverbend Ambulatory Surgery Center in Springfield, and Dibblee is director of the Portland Clinic Surgery Centers in Portland.

The announcement was officially made at the OASCA annual conference, which was held in Portland, Ore., Nov. 11-13, 2015.

Willamette Surgery Center Offers Total Joint Replacement in Salem

Just a decade ago, 44-year old Shelley Henderson would have had to suffer through the extreme pain of her arthritic knees for many years before being able to take advantage of total knee replacement surgery.

But, thanks to recent changes in doctors’ and patients’ attitudes toward the timing of knee replacement surgery, Henderson didn’t have to become incapacitated before having her knees fixed. Instead, the Jefferson, Ore., resident had both knees replaced, just three months apart, at the Salem-based Willamette Surgery Center (WSC). The bilateral total knee replacement surgeries were performed on an outpatient basis on May 7 and Aug. 13, 2015 by orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Dan Sewell. His practice is at Hope Orthopedics of Oregon.

Salem Endoscopy Center celebrates its 10th anniversary: 4 things to know

Salem (Ore.) Endoscopy Center has been open for decade, and the center plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary, according to Oregon Live report.

Here are four things to know.

1. Salem Endoscopy Center will hold an open house on Nov. 4. The event will focus on dispelling common myths about colonoscopy and gluten intolerance, according to the report.

2. Gastroenterologist Robert Ponec, MD, will launch the event. Dr. Ponec will discuss the importance of colorectal cancer screening, as well as the “80 percent by 2018” initiative.

3. The endoscopy center is affiliated with Salem Gastro, which was established in 1979.

4. Ten gastroenterologists perform procedures at the center.

The prevalence of celiac disease is only 1 percent, but it is underdiagnosed and the rate of diagnosis has increased in the last 10 years. If you associate certain symptoms with your wheat intake, finding out for sure whether you have celiac or a different reason for your wheat intolerance is essential, Denise Cedar of Salem Gatro said.

Oregon Ambulatory Surgery Center Association hosts Annual Education Conference and Trade Show

The Oregon Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (OASCA) is presenting its 2015 Annual Education Conference and Trade Show at The Ambridge Event Center in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 11-13. This year’s pre-conference event on Nov. 11 centers on a Veterans Day celebration, featuring two military veterans and a USO fundraiser. The conference and trade show also feature a congressional address by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), and an update on what ASCs need to know about surgical technologist certification, among other topics.
